(Headlight Tailight The journey continues on)

I'm in a Japanese song class this semester, and it's been quite an experience. There's a lot you can pick up from what people sing about - though there was a lot I missed until the professor explained. We're going through Japanese songs from World War II through today. It's interesting how they've changed and how many genres there are. I'll definitely remember a few(most of the lyrics through too) after this class.

Well, today was a really fun day. You see, most people in my class are too embarrassed to sing. In a song class. Which is ridiculous if you think about it. But today, we had a guest professor come in and talk about her favorite musician Nakajima Miyuki. Our professor's enthusiasm was easy to pick up on, so when she encouraged us to sing along with her, I was there. It helped that Headlights-Taillights has an easy melody and that was had the lyrics in hiragana.

The song is below. The second time we sang it, we watched this video, which was put together after the earthquake last year. It was very moving to say the least. The lyrics are below.

Nobody yet to tell a story
Into the roaring winds,
Scattered stars,
Even those are to be forgotten,
Headlight Taillight—The journey continues on
Headlight Taillight—The journey continues on

Footprints in the rain,
Erased in the raining hours,
Singing of heroes
Passing through the times
Headlight Taillight—The journey continues on
Headlight Taillight—The journey continues on
Shining the ahead --
The dreams yet to come true,
Shining the far behind --
The dreams of innocence

The basic meaning of the song is simple - the past is forgotten, we need to continue moving on. With the video it implies that the Japanese need to deal with the horrible earthquake and tsunami and move on, because life keeps on continuing. 「旅はまだ終わらない」 or the journey doesn't end means something entirely different to me than to most Japanese I think. To Buddhists it means reincarnation. To me it means that literally our one life will continue on to eternity. That's why it was very touching to me(other than being a good melody).

Reminds me of this passage:

"...that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,  I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:12-14(bold mine)

Now the song's stuck in my head. Hope it's stuck in yours.
